THE Ministry of Culture Youth and Sport on Friday presented awards to several workers in the triple sector for their commitment to carrying out the mandate of the Ministry during their tenure of employment. The ceremony took place at the Umana Yana where the Ministry hosted a Christmas social for employees.
The first two persons to be recognised had already given their years of service and are now retired. Monica Van Dyke served at the Umana Yana for over 23 years before her retirement and Jenny Daly of the Museum of African Heritage had given 35 years of her life to the Public Service of Guyana before her retirement.
Other persons who were acknowledged were: Lawrence Kellman of the Department of Youth; Radica Sukhai of the Department of Sport; Shane Cameron of the Department of Culture; Shondell Burnette of the Ministry’s Secretariat and Jeffrey Simon of the Administrative Division.
Special kudos went to Cleaner Tulsi Angan who was commended for her special dedication to her work.
Permanent Secretary of the Ministry Alfred King in his remarks to the gathering commended the workers present for their dedication through their various duties.
In a brief recap of the Ministry’s performance for the year, he noted that within the Human Resource capacity there was room to expand the base to meet the complex demands of the triple sector, and pointed out that over 95% of the activities planned for the year has been achieved, notwithstanding difficulties in managing some of the preset programmes.
Noting that there was still $165M to be spent from the budgetary allocation to the Ministry, PS King noted that there were still some challenges remaining. He outlined briefly some of the achievements during the year including festivals, youth outreaches and programmes.
The social activities began following the formal presentations with Minister Frank Anthony posing several questions based on historical facts surrounding Christmas.
In a fine display of advanced technology, employees turned to their phones to Google the answers and ended with two groups having a standoff with a final question being posed to determine the winners. Needless to say, in the spirit of the season an eventual winner was announced. (GINA)
