FIRE maliciously set during a family dispute over ownership of a property completely destroyed the home of a family of six at Lot 22 Samaroo Dam, Pouderoyen, West Bank Demerara, early yesterday morning.
Chief Fire Officer Marlon Gentle told this publication that a family member deliberately set the fire that razed the two-storeyed dwelling house with its contents about 07:43 hours, following a row over the property.
That family member was, however, apprehended while walking on the Demerara Harbour Bridge (DHB) sometime after the incident; and when the police tried to arrest him, he attacked them with a fork, but was eventually subdued and taken into custody.
The home owner has been identified as Philomena Pilgrim, 57, who occupied the edifice with her husband and children.

He noted that the Guyana Fire Service (GFS) investigations are ongoing to ascertain who owns the edifice.
Electrical fire at Non Pareil, ECD
In a December 10 fire at Lot 103 Section ‘B’ Non Pareil, East Coast Demerara, home to five occupants, including two children, Chief Fire Officer Marlon Gentle yesterday told the Guyana Chronicle that blaze which consumed the two-storeyed wooden and concrete dwelling house is so far deemed “electrical” in origin.
At the time of that fire, an eight-year-old child was the only occupant. He reported hearing what sounded like an ‘explosion’, and ran out of the house when he saw fire emanating from the upper flat of the building.
The well furnished building became engulfed at about 13:00 hrs on December 10, and the occupants lost all their worldly possessions in that conflagration.
