THE problem is not why so many men are killing their spouses, but rather why it happens so often.
Here lies the two most important problems why these killings happen so often.
(1) JUSTICE Navindra Singh yesterday sentenced Dwayne Jordon to death for the gruesome murder of his reputed wife, Claudeene Rampersaud, who was axed to death in an abandoned house at Den Amstel, West Coast Demerara.
(2) ANDERSON Nicholson, who murdered his wife whom he had married
three months earlier, at Rosignol, West Bank Berbice, escaped the gallows after he confessed to a manslaughter indictment, and was sentenced to 13 years imprisonment by Justice Roxanne George, at the Berbice Assizes on Monday.
Two women murdered brutally by their men but the law see things differently in sentencing these murderous men.
Had Dwayne Jordon pleaded to the lesser count of manslaughter he might have received the exact same sentence or less for the same crime committed by Anderson Nicholson.
It seems as though the law is sending the wrong signal to men out there who are intent on killing their spouses.
In the Anderson Nicholson case where he pleaded guilty to the lesser count of manslaughter, he signalled to would-be spouse killers, hey go out and murder your spouse and come let’s make a deal.
This is a clear case where no one has to ask why are there so many spouse killings but why these killings happen so often.
I am no fan of the death penalty simply because some day an ambitious law maker might want to make a run for the highest office of the land by showing how tough she/he is on crimes and killers.
She/he might even send one wrong person to death for political gains is most frightening.
If the evidence is there to prove that one killed another, then the law must be even-handed and say no to this law called plead to the lesser count of manslaughter just because the killer does not want to waste the court’s time.
Life in prison with no chance of parole will send the message loud and clear to would be spouse killers and other killers as well.
It will not stop killings but will surely give would-be killer(s) lots to think of before doing the act.
Once the law can prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt then no plea deal, once found guilty by the jury, then the sentence must be life behind bars for the rest of their natural lives with absolutely no chance of parole.
Taxpayers couldn’t care less if these killers receive bread and water behind bars every single day for the rest of their lives, so what if GHRA and the opposition come crying about inhumane treatment.
Taxpayers must speak with one voice and say let the GHRA and the opposition foot the bill for lobster fest and five- star jail for murderers.
