FANS are anticipating a good night of football when the second annual Banks Beer Knockout Tournament kicks off tonight with a double-header at the Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) ground, Bourda, commencing at 18:00hrs. It’s no secret that GCC ground, like the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) ground, has not always been favourable to sports during inclement weather, but grounds men of the Guyana Football Association (GFA) have been working assiduously to get systems in place for the kick-off.
The tournament gets under way with Sunburst Camptown, a side favoured to lift the title, going head-to-head with the young Houston Stars team at 18:00hrs. The action continues at 20:00hrs when Fruta Conquerors, last year’s runners-up, clash with Flamingo Football Club.
This is the first step for these teams on the path to the grand prize of $4M and bragging rights.
Last year, Camptown and Conquerors recorded 2-0 wins over their opponents on the opening night of the tournament to progress to the quarter-final round.
They then progressed to the semi-final round where Camptown were defeated by Alpha United and Conquerors moved on to face them (Alpha) after defeating Beacon United.
However, Alpha United will not be participating in this year’s tournament which should make the tournament more interesting since no one team is favoured to reach the final.
Meanwhile, the preliminary round of the tournament has partially been completed. Rusal Football Club took the first of two empty spots in the round of sixteen. They first defeated Banks All Star then Eagles United.
Ann’s Grove await the winners of the Blueberry Hill/Caribbean United match which will be played on Wednesday, December 19, at the GFC ground at 18:00krs. Ann’s Grove take on the victors of this match on Friday, December 21, at a venue to be announced, to determine who will take the final spot in the round of sixteen.
