At the time, Commissioner Brumell was speaking with reporters after the Guyana Police Force (GPF) had concluded its Awards Ceremony at Police Officers’ Mess, Eve Leary yesterday.
On October 7, Crime Chief Seelall Persaud had told the Guyana Chronicle that the International Criminal Police Organisation (INTERPOL) had been notified and was on alert for the wanted fugitives, after it was opined that the men may have skipped the country and had gone out of the jurisdiction.
Persaud had said that, legally, there was no evidence to suggest the wanted duo had left Guyana, even though they could not have been located then.
Wanted bulletins had been issued after the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Ms Shalimar Ali-Hack, had advised that the three policemen who had carried out the operation in Agricola be charged for the unlawful killing of Shaquille Grant.
Lewis, Blue, and Terrence Wallace, who alone had made a court appearance, have been jointly charged with the capital offence; but Lewis and Blue had failed to appear to answer the charge before a magistrate on October 2.
Grant was fatally shot when a squad of cops surprised a group of young men who were under a shed in Agricola.
Police claimed the youths had first discharged bullets at them, and they had returned fire, resulting in the death of Grant and injuries to Romel Bollers, before three others were arrested but later released after relatives and others had met with Commissioner Brumell.
The shooting had occurred at about 12:10 hrs on September 11 in Caesar Street, Agricola, where Grant, of Lot 12 ‘BB’ Eccles, East Bank Demerara, was killed and Bollers, 20, of Brutus Street, Agricola, was injured.
Police had also recovered a .38 Smith and Wesson revolver from the scene.
