Breach in river defence dam being sealed at Lilydale, Pomeroon

A breach in the river defence dam at Lilydale, Lower Pomeroon River, is currently being sealed by the Region 2 Sea Defence Department, says Vice Chairman Mr. Vishnu Samaroo. Responding to the issue raised by APNU Councillor Mr Prince Shepherd at Tuesday’s final meeting of the RDC for this year, the Vice Chairman said the breach was caused mainly by erosion in a section that was left unattended by a farmer, who had moved out of the area.

Mr. Samaroo said the Regional Administration moved quickly to get the breach sealed, so farms and the nearby Lilydale Primary School could be protected from flooding. The APNU councillor, however, charged that the entire school compound was flooded several times during high tides, and the toilets could not be used.

Mr Samaroo, in responding to that councillor, said he had visited the area and had observed that the flooding was caused by the breach, which is being addressed. He said that through the Ministry of Education, the school has been selected by the Government for construction of modern toilet and washroom facilities. He informed the councillor that the flooding was over and the school is dry, all because of the efficiency of the Government, which is not what had obtained during the regime of the PNC.
