POLICE late Tuesday night said that following a sting operation on December 4, 2012 a Police Constable who is the Orderly attached to the Sparendaam Magistrate Court was placed under close arrest after he was caught in possession of monies he had accepted from a male defendant as inducement to settle a matter of domestic violence which was before the court.
However, when the matter was called in court yesterday the virtual complainant did not offer any evidence against the defendant and consequently the matter was dismissed. Recognising that under the circumstances there was no need for the assistance of the police rank, the man asked back for his money which was refused.
The matter was reported to the police and subsequent response resulted in the monies being found in the possession of the rank. He is under close arrest as the investigations continue.
More than a week ago, in a separate incident, three cops from Berbice managed to get off scot-free after the virtual compliant exited the case which was before the court.
The trio, who were charged with stealing mercury from a businessman after he refused to pay them $1M.
They were identified as Corporal Michael Campbell and Constables Reginald Jonas and Curt Glasgow, who have since been designated desk duties until they are dealt with on a department level.
The policemen were charged with simple larceny of two flasks of mercury from businessman, Phillip Sampson of Number 78 Village, Corentyne on November 27.
The incident occurred at Palmyra, East Bank Berbice when the police stopped Sampson, who was returning from Georgetown. Although the businessman provided documents of ownership and that the mercury was legally obtained, the cops reportedly took possession of the two flasks after he failed to give into their demand of $1M.
