ON Wednesday November 28, 2012 at about 13:15 hours, I saw a Public Works tow truck arrive at Vreed-en-Hoop. There was a mini-bus, PJJ 2826, truck GNN 9130, a car PNN 5820, a huge umbrella and tables aligned on the road shoulder. All of them were fully stocked with greens, vegetables, plucked chickens and groceries without the necessary GRA licence, etc. The vehicles are also breaching the GRA regulation under which it was registered. The tow truck reversed in front of the vending truck, GNN 9130,dropped its back and pulled out a wire rope with a hook and attached it to the truck. A commotion erupted and the owner drove his car, PNN 5820, in front of his truck to prevent the tow truck from working. After some time of heated exchanges there were negotiations on the removal. The vendor then packed his merchandise into the truck, some in the bus and drove off the truck GNN 9130, north. After a while he returned to the site, waited for a while and then drove to the Harbour Bridge to verify the tow truck was out of sight. He then returned and repositioned his truck and tables etc and restarted business as usual. Not to forget this is round the clock, day in and out, etc encumbrance. This act is to demonstrate lawlessness versus the law. The owner of the land is asking them to clear in front of his property in vain.
The NDC, RDC Public Works and police presence tried on numerous occasions and they were unsuccessful. Beating of people also took place on one occasion.
What is the purpose of our laws? Should all Guyana begin to flout the laws? Where is justice? Are we now reverting to might is right or the law of revenge? These are signs of deterioration and an ungovernable state. We need to arrest this situation urgently.
