THE DEMERARA Cricket Club (DCC) on Monday held an awards ceremony for 10 of its members who performed outstandingly at this year’s Caribbean Secondary Examinations Certificate (CSEC) and at Caribbean Advance Proficiency Examination (CAPE). Among the awardees, who are all cricketers of the club, were Khemraj Rupee who gained 12 Grade One and finished in the top ten (10) in Guyana, David Mohamed and Nicholas Bollers who passed nine (9) subjects with two Grade One, Micheal Shalim passed eight (8) subjects with a Distinction and a Grade One and Orlando Sturge eight (8) subjects with four Grade Two.
Also successful at the examinations were Shamar Mantu, who passed seven subjects with a Grade One and four Grade Two, Josiah Matil with six subjects – a Grade One and two Grade Two, Cleon McEwan six subjects with three Grade Two and Andrew Gibson six subjects while Sunil Rupee passed four subjects at GCE A Level with two As and two Bs.
DCC’s president Alfred Mentore stated: “We at The Demerara Cricket Club are of the view that the marriage of sports and education is a vital catalyst to a rounded development and as such we see the need to award these young cricketers for their excellence.
The DCC has always piloted itself as a club of excellence which does not only include on-field success, but also academic and administrative, with individuals such as Chetram Singh (former president of GCB), Fred Wills (former Attorney-General and Minister of Foreign Affairs) and Robert Williams (former Deputy Mayor of Georgetown), all being products of the club.
With these youths we are more likely to continue this tradition and we are proud to award these young cricketers and will continue to do same for others in the future.”
Former West Indies Test player Travis Dowlin encouraged the cricketers to pursue higher level of education and a determined club coach Gavin Nedd persuaded members and players to follow in the footsteps of their teammates and to balance their time properly between education and sports.
The vote of thanks was moved by Khemraj Rupee who said the awardees were grateful that the executives and members of DCC recognised their work put out from its players and thanked them for encouraging and supporting them in their cricket and academics, especially coach Nedd and Mentore, who would both encourage and enquire about the player’s studies.
The grateful cricketers and parents urged their team mates and fellow members to follow in their footsteps and to make education a priority in life as it is the key to success, before they were all presented with a DCC Plaque of Excellence.
