Essequibo rice farmers using rainy weather to sow

RICE farmers on Essequibo Coast are taking advantage of the current rainy weather to prepare their fields for sowing. They have already sown some 4,000 acres, mostly in first depth or low land areas and it is reported that the crop is blooming under the present conditions.
However, those planters who have not yet planted are awaiting more rainfall to flood their cultivations so land preparations can begin.
Reports said fields in high lands and Cozier Canal have to depend on irrigation supply and rain before they can prepare for sowing and some farmers said they are looking forward to more heavy rain over the coming days.
Meanwhile, between Hampton Court and Good Hope were cultivated within the last two weeks.
A total of 32,500 acres are expected to be put under the plough for the 2013 Spring Crop.
