THREE fishermen appeared before Magistrate Zamilla Ali, at Cove and John Court, on Monday, accused of knowingly dealing with uncustomed goods with intent to defraud the Guyana Revenue Authority of duties payable thereon, contrary to the Customs Act. The trio, Alvin Sooklall, Maraj Ameraj and Steffon Persaud, all pleaded not guilty to the charge.
Particulars of the offence stated that on August 24, at Enmore foreshore, also on East Coast Demerara, they were in possession of 20 cases of Ciroc, 20 cases of Grey Goose, 13 cases of Johnny Walker, 29 cases of Jose Cuervo, 53 cases of Absolut Vodka, five cases of Baileys and 27 cases of Hennessy, with intent to defraud.
Magistrate Alli, after listening to the details of the charge and representation by attorney-at-law Mr. Mohanlall granted the defendants $40,000 bail each and postponed the case to December 6.
