Mexican Ambassador donates books on culture

THE Ambassador of Mexico to Guyana, His Excellency Mr. Francisco Olguim Uribe, yesterday handed over several books depicting Mexican culture to the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Dr Frank Anthony.   altThis presentation was made in the minister’s office at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport on Main Street.
According to Uribe, a study done several years ago highlighted that many aspects of Mexican culture offered very valuable assistance to one’s knowledge of Mexican literature, among other things, and this has since led to improvements in Mexico.

Uribe said Minister Anthony expressed interest in those facts which were put into books and were, by this presentation, being offered to Guyana through the minister and his ministry.

He explained that the books are written in Spanish, and at this point, Minister Anthony stated that it was no problem at all, because of the bilingual factor. He opined that persons would have no problem at all in reading and understanding the novels.

Uribe said the books were a special donation from the Mexican Foreign Ministry. He said he had managed to get his hands on some of the Guyana Classics as well.

Minister Anthony said the books are of extreme importance to the culture of Guyana, and he is pleased to receive them on behalf of the Ministry of Culture.
Asked about the relationship between Guyana and Mexico, he said the two countries share an excellent relationship in many areas, such as climate change and multilateral affairs, peace and upholding national laws.

He noted that the two countries are also convinced of the need for international cooperation, and Mexico has a lot of Guyanese who play vitally important roles in the country.
He said the many Guyanese who play a great role in assisting Mexico are too numerous to mention, but he acknowledged that they all are appreciated.

Minister Anthony noted that the books will not be donated to the National Library, but rather to the research section of the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport.

He also said that 26 of the Guyana Classics have been completed thus far, the rest will be completed at the end of this year, and will conclude this series. Next year will mark the beginning of a new series of the Guyana Classics.
