THANKS to a solid all round performance from their skipper Leon Johnson, host Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) registered an innings victory over Transport Sports Club (TSC) as action in the inaugural Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA) organized Hadi’s Mall Incorporated two day first division competition continued. In the other two matches, Guyana Defence Force (GDF) and Everest Cricket Club (ECC) snatched first innings points from Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) and Guyana National Industrial Corporation (GNIC) respectively, as rain interrupted all three second round fixtures.
At the GCC ground, TSC were asked to bat first and were bowled out for 86 after resuming on their overnight score of 78 for 7, with Carl Rambharose 29 (3×4) and Ryan Hemraj 18 being their principal scorers against the bowling of Johnson who took 5 for 37 and Almando Doman’s 4 for 12.
When GCC batted, they got a solid start of 87 from Jeetendra Sookdeo and Robin Bacchus who both made 48, with the former hitting six fours and one six and the latter eight fours, before Johnson joined the fray by adding 61 for the second wicket with Bacchus, after Sookdeo was dismissed.
At lunch, GCC were 171 for 2 with Johnson on an even 50 (7×4, 1×6), after which he motored to an unbeaten 112 that was decorated with 10 fours and five sixes, while Winston Forrester scored 36, as GCC reached 258 for 3 declared off 36 overs.
Faced with a deficit of 172 runs, TSC fared much better in their second innings, even though they were bowled out for 170 with Hemraj hitting seven fours and one six in his topscore of 44 and received support from Quinn Proctor who scored 28 with three fours and one six.
Johnson was once again their tormentor with the ball, taking his second five wicket haul (5 for 22) to end with match figures of 10 for 59, which along with Raj Nannan’s 3 for 28 and Bernard Bailey who took 2 for 30, ensured GCC won by an innings and two runs in fading light.
At the DCC ground, the home team were asked to bat first by GDF and declared their first innings closed at 220 for 7, after resuming on 92 for 2, to which their opponents reached a hard fought 223 for 8 off 35 overs, before play was called off.
Andrew Lyght Jnr. who resumed the day on 52 in DCC’s first innings, topscored with 84 (7×4, 4×6), Christopher Barnwell struck six fours in his 37, Paul Wintz five fours in his robust 31 and Jahron Byron 22 with three fours.
Both Derwin Christian and Jamal Hinckson failed to trouble the scorers, as Combined Campuses and College’s fast bowler Gilford Moore, Jeremiah Harris and Dillon Heyliger took two wickets each for 26, 30 and 53 runs respectively.
When GDF batted, Kevon Boodie who made a pugnacious 51 (6×4, 2×6) and Travis Blyden 35 (4×4) added 66 for the first wicket, but it was the batting of Heyliger who made an unbeaten 63 which included six sixes and four fours and skipper Marcus Watkins’ 45 (7×4, 1×6), which steered the Army Boys to first innings points, against the bowling of Totaram Bishun who took 4 for 53 for DCC.
At Camp Road, ECC scored 228 in their first innings, thanks to Chandrapaul Hemraj’s 82 (9×4, 2×6), Troy Gonsalves’ 78 (7×4, 3×6) and Tagenarine Chanderpaul’s 24 which included five fours.
Collis Butts 5 for 55, Ryan Shun 3 for 68 and Rayon Griffith 2 for 58, did the damage with the ball for GNIC, who in their turn at the wicket were bowled out for 143, with Krishna Arjune hitting a responsible 75 while Gonsalves took five wickets.
