REIGNING Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Super League champions Alpha ‘The Hammer’ United have been listed among the 16 teams who will do battle for the G$4M first prize in the 23rd annual Kashif and Shanghai Football tournament which kicks off on December 16 2012 and culminates on January 1, 2013. The tournament will be played on a knockout basis over eight playing days between the best 16 affiliated clubs under the GFF, with the 10 Super League Clubs gaining automatic invitation.
Apart from Alpha United, BK International Western Tigers and Pele are the other clubs who will be playing out of Georgetown in this year’s tournament, with Amelia’s Ward United, Milerock, Silver Shattas and Winners Connection representing the mining town of Linden.
For the East Bank area, Timehri Panthers and Grove Hi-Tech will lead their challenge against Buxton Stars, Buxton United and BV/Triumph United from the East Coast of Demerara, while Den Amstel and Uitvlugt will challenge the other competitors on behalf of the West Demerara area.
Liquid Gold from Bartica and Rosignol United out of the Ancient County of Berbice complete this year’s participating teams’ list with the standby team being Pouderoyen out of the West Demerara Football Association (WDFA).
Five venues, namely Georgetown Football Club ground (GFC), Uitvlugt Community Centre ground, Buxton, Beterverwagting and the Guyana National Stadium at Providence are the venues to be used for matches this year in the tournament which will be played alongside the organisers’ inaugural Chico/Kashif and Shanghai Under-13 tournament.
The playing dates with venues in brackets are as follows: Opening Ceremony Sunday December 16 (GFC), Wednesday, December 19 (GFC), Friday December 21 (GFC), Sunday 23rd (Uitvlugt), Tuesday 25th (Christmas Day) BV, Wednesday 26th (Boxing Day) Buxton, Friday 28th (Semi-Finals) GFC and the Grand Final on January 1, 2013, Guyana National Stadium Providence.
