MINISTER of Human Services and Social Security, Ms. Jennifer Webster has promised the villagers of Endeavour, on Leguan Island, to donate four sewing machines for beneficial educational purposes.
She made the pledge to residents at an outreach last Saturday, which was hosted in Endeavour (East Leguan) Primary school, when a female resident raised the issue of girl children and teens on the island not having enough extracurricular activities to boost and benefit themselves.
Upon stating this, other residents spoke about the old sewing machines which were used before and being out of date and not functional.
Minister Webster, upon hearing those concerns, enquired about instructors for sewing classes and was pleased when the head teacher of the Endeavour Primary said there are persons to fill the position.
The minister did not give a specific time when the machines will be sent to the school but she gave her word that it would be done as soon as possible, stating that the development of young women in the area is very important.
She underscored that an academic education is important but even so, a trade such as sewing will assist the young women to become entrepreneurs and have a better future.
Most of the residents seemed pleased about this idea, as it was raised that there is one person on the other side of the island conducting such as sewing and cooking classes, but persons are unable to attend as a result of the distance and being unable to pay the fees to attend.
