Calvin Eversley dies

Head of the University of Guyana’s Department of Law, Professor Calvin A. Eversley, Esq. , LL.M (Harvard), LL.B (Honours), died on Wednesday at the Balwant Singh Hospital, after a brief period of illness.  He was 63.

altHis sudden passing has sent shockwaves across, not only the Turkeyen and Tain University  campuses, but indeed the local judicial system; Harvard Law School, Cambridge, MA, USA; Sir Hugh Wooding Law School, St. Augustine,Trinidad and Tobago; University of the West Indies, Cave Hill, Barbados and all other jurisdictions in which he served, doing so with distinction.
Professor Eversley, who was first admitted to the Practice of Law before the Supreme Court of Guyana in 1981, has enjoyed a long and distinguished career in the legal field.  He proceeded to Harvard Law School, Cambridge, USA, in 1983 and graduated from that institution in 1984, with the LL.M. (Master of Laws).  In 1987 he was admitted to the Practice of Law before the Barbados Supreme Court.    Having passed several other Bar Examinations, in 1994, Guyana’s  legal luminary was admitted to the Practice of Law before the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit.
In  addition to operating his Law Chambers on King Street in the city, as Attorney and Counselor- lslbarm, in August 2010, twice  served as Full -Time Professor of Law and Head of the University  for the University of Guyana’s Department of Law, for the LL.B Programme. The periods served were: From November 2008 – August 2009 and September 1, 2010 to July 31, 2011.
In 2010 (Semester 2), Professor Eversley  served as Part-Time Professor of Law (Semester 2), lecturing in the course – Equitable Remedies.
From November 2008 – August 2009, he worked as (1) Full Time Professor of Law and (2)  Head of Department), University of Guyana LL.B Programme, with ,  responsibility for the overall administration of the Department of Law.
From 2010 to the time of his passing: Full Time Professor of Law, during which time he  lectured in the following courses: Jurisprudence (Part 2) Law of Torts 2 (Part 2); Law of Trusts (Part 3); Equitable Remedies (Part 2);and Law of Tort 1 (Part 1).  Other areas in which Professor Eversley lectured over time included: Law of Contract; Constitutional Law; Administrative Law; Law in Society 1; Law in Society 2; Commonwealth Caribbean Human Rights Laws and International Law.
Additionally, the distinguished Professor served as Attorney and Counselor-at-law (U.S. Third Circuit Court of Appeal, New York, Barbados, Guyana); Former Assistant Attorney General of the US Virgin Islands
Department of Justice of the USA; Former head of Department of the University of the West Indies LL.B Programme at the College of the Bahamas.
He had membership of the following professional bodies:
•    The American Bar Association
•    New York bar Association
•    National bar Association
•    Association of the bar of the City of New York
•    American Immigration Lawyers’ Association
•    American Association of International Law
•    Harvard Alumni Association   and a host of Honours, Awards, Citations and commendations at international levels.
Professor Eversley has published more than 54 books and several other legal  and other documents.
