THE student body of the Saraswattie Vidya Niketan(SVN) school in collaboration with the National Blood Bank of Guyana held a two-day blood drive on the premises of the school located at Cornelia Ida, West Coast Demerara to support the National Blood Bank’s ‘Good Samaritan’ programme.
The youth movement on Saturday and Sunday held the first of its two-day blood drives that saw more than 200 persons voluntarily donating blood.
The first to donate were the students and teachers followed by former students and persons from around the area, most of whom were first time donors.
Director of the National Blood Bank, Dr Nadia Lou in an interview via telephone stated that the drive is being conducted as the blood bank is always in dire need of blood.
She also stated that she is proud to see persons are cooperating and showing a positive attitude.
She noted that that these organisations have always been in the midst of assisting the blood bank in their missions to acquire blood throughout the years and noted that they pledged to continue doing so.
Speaking to a donor whose name was not given via telephone, he stated how terrified he was about the idea of needles, but overcame them quickly as a result of the courteous, encouraging, friendly staff and atmosphere of the blood bank.
The SVN’s gesture is to assist the blood bank to reach its 100% mark for the year.
Dr. Lou urged members of the general public to become volunteer donors, as the process, which takes just about 15 minutes, comes with health benefits, as it gives the body an opportunity to replenish red blood cell and noting that one pint of blood can save three lives.
