THE SURINAMESE delegation for the first leg of this year’s Inter-Guiana Games (IGG) which is being hosted by Guyana, arrived yesterday afternoon just after 15:00hrs and, following an administrative meeting at the Ocean View Hotel last night, will partake in the opening ceremony that is set for the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH).
The inner circuit of the National Park will be the venue for this morning’s cycling Team Time Trial which pedals off at 08:00hrs, followed by the opening ceremony which gets under way one hour later.
Prime Minister Samuel Hinds, Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport Dr Frank Anthony and Director of Sport within the National Sports Commission Neil Kumar are all expected to deliver brief remarks at this morning’s opening ceremony, along with the head of the Surinamese delegation.
The Athletes and Officials Oath and the hoisting of the National Flags of both Suriname and Guyana will precede the official remarks, following which it is back to competition for the athletes who will be battling for supremacy in cycling, chess and volleyball on this leg of the IGG.
Male and female volleyball will serve off at the CASH, while chess will be contested at the Ocean View Hotel, with the cyclists turning their attention to the West Bank Demerara carriageway, where they will do battle from 14:00hrs.
The closing ceremony is set for 22:00hrs at the CASH while the visitors will depart the Ocean View Hotel at 05:00hrs for home tomorrow to begin preparations for Guyana’s return visit to their country next weekend, where they will battle for supremacy in football, basketball and table tennis.
In an invited comment from Kumar, Chronicle Sport learnt that the Surinamese were well received at the Ocean View Hotel yesterday afternoon, before they were given a tour of the inner circuit of the National Park, by Kumar and Hassan Mohamed, with the latter taking them over to the WBD carriageway later yesterday, so they can be familiar with the route for the road race.
“Everything is in place for today’s opening ceremony. The Surinamese are here, they were given a tour of the National Park and the West Demerara roadways, while we will be having our administrative and technical meeting at the Ocean View Hotel tonight (last night)” added Kumar.
