FOR the past 21 years, Managing Director (MD) of Mohamed’s Enterprise, Nazar Mohamed, has thrown the support of his business behind the Kashif and Shanghai (K&S) Organisation’s annual football extravaganza; hence it was no surprise yesterday, when he decided to throw in his lot, into this year’s
tournament for the 22nd time.At a simple presentation ceremony held at the sponsor’s Lombard Street location, Supervisor within the Electrical Department, Dione Johnson, handed over a cheque for G$7M and several replica trophies to Jaime-Lee Charles, the daughter of Greg ‘Kashif’ Muhammad, in the presence of the dynamic head of the K&S Organisation in Muhammad and Aubrey ‘Shanghai’ Major.
According to Muhammad, the sponsors’ contribution will cover the first prize of $4M among other awards, for which he is extremely grateful, while the MD said they have a very long relationship with the Kashif and Shanghai Organisation.
“Mohamed’s Enterprise has been a longstanding sponsor of the Kashif and Shanghai tournament. As I can recall, it started over two decades ago and we are very happy to be a part of this sponsorship today, for as you know, the people of Linden are very generous to our business,” stated Mohamed who called on Corporate Guyana to support the tournament and sports in general.
Said Muhammad, “Mohamed’s Enterprise has been with our tournament for a very long time. In fact he is the longest-standing sponsor for the Kashif and Shanghai football tournament. He has been there for 22 years and every single year, he has been doing much better for the tournament and we are extremely grateful.
“Like he (Mohamed) said, he has Linden in his heart in a big way and we are very grateful for his contribution as, apart from being a sponsor, he is a good friend to us. In fact he has been a friend to us before he became a sponsor and we wish to thank him for his contributions to the tournament over the years.”
This year’s tournament will kick off on Sunday, December 16 and culminate on Tuesday, January 1 2013 at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence, where Jamaican Reggae/Dancehall artiste Mavado is expected to perform along with other artistes.
Apart from the G$4M first prize, the winning team will also receive medals, a championship trophy with replicas, runners-up G$1M, second and third runners-up $750 000 and $500 000 respectively, while the tournament’s Most Valuable Player will drive off with a motor car and the best coach with one motorcycle.
Added to those prizes, one lucky spectator will, on Boxing Day, ride off with one motorcycle. Several cell phones and credit will be up for grabs and each participating team will receive a complete set of uniform.
According to Muhammad, during this year’s tournament the organisers will seek to connect more with its traditional supporters through the staging of matches at various community grounds, such as Uitvlugt, Beterverwagting and Buxton – a ground they are particularly pleased to return to, following a period of absence.
Some of the clubs who will be doing battle for supremacy in this year’s tournament are: Alpha United, Pele, BK International Western Tigers, Victoria Kings and Seawall United, along with the other clubs who are currently competing in the Guyana Football Federation’s Super League tournament.
