MABARUMA residents are seeking funds to upgrade a playfield that was recently established by the Interim Management Committee (IMC).
In an interview with state media, Leomie Willis, Chairperson of the IMC, said the field was established to keep youths occupied and away from drugs and other illegal activities. She said the ground, the only playfield in central Mabaruma, hosts school sports and football, cricket and volleyball matches, and cultural activities.
She said that youths previously had to walk for miles to the other playground, thus diverting to other activities along the way, and arriving home late.
She added that another initiative will be established in the village of Whitewater and the central communities of the region.
The Mabaruma IMC and the Wauna Women’s Group will also hold Diwali celebrations on the ground.
Amerindian Heritage, Indian Arrival and Emancipation celebrations were also held on the ground.
