GBBC REDEMPTION : ‘Big Truck’ promises to make amends : … ‘Wonder Kid’ sounds warning to Lee-Isidore

FORMER World Boxing Council (WBC) light heavyweight champion Wayne ‘Big Truck’ Brathwaite promises to make amends for his devastating loss to Barbados’ Shawn ‘The Sniper’ Cox earlier this year, when he faces Trinidad and Tobago-based Guyanese Shawn Corbin in a 12-round contest tomorrow night at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
The two will headline the Guyana Boxing Board of Control (GBBC) card dubbed Redemption, doing battle over 12 rounds for the WBC/Caribbean Boxing Federation (CABOFE) cruiserweight belt in the main bout, which will be supported by Clive ‘Wonder Kid’ Atwell going up against T&T’s Prince Lee-Isidore for the WBC/CABOFE junior welterweight crown.
At the press conference which took place in the studios of the National Communications Network yesterday afternoon, Brathwaite took the opportunity to apologise to the local boxing fraternity for his erratic display against Cox in February and promised to correct same tomorrow night.
“I did not give a good performance in February when I fought Shawn Cox, who got an early Christmas gift. That was the worst performance in my life and I would like to say sorry to the boxing public and this time around, it will not be the same.
“Many persons felt that my loss to Cox meant the end of my career and I am on my way out, but I would like to say I am not going anywhere and come Saturday night, I will be coming out to prove that I am still around, as I still have more in me,” assured Brathwaite.
He believes that Corbin chose the wrong time to fight him, as this time around he is very hungry for success, while his mom, who also manages him, said the boxing public can expect fireworks at the venue tomorrow night.
Not one to back down from a barrage of words from any one of his opponents, Corbin reminded his opponent that talk is cheap and he intends to prove himself on fight night.
“You can talk how much you want to, as talk is cheap. On the night of the fight, I will prove myself for I know I have what it takes to defeat you and I will be victorious Saturday night,” posited Corbin.
According to GBBC president Peter Abdool, his entity has asked Cox to face Brathwaite in a rematch, but his response will depend on the remuneration, but they are working on having that contest occur for a second time, since Brathwaite and the Guyanese boxing fans need it.
Also exuding confidence ahead of their contest was Atwell, the national featherweight champion who faces Isidore, an opponent who has knocked out all 10 of his opponents before the third round, for the WBC/CABOFE junior welterweight bout and promises and to not only hand his opponent his first loss, but also take the belt in the process.
“He has 10 wins all by knockout is a good thing for him, but he has never fought someone like Clive Atwell, since he would not have had all his knockouts so early. Fighting somebody like me would have exposed him and that’s what will happen Saturday night.
“If Isidore comes out to box, I will box. If he comes out to fight, I will fight. In fact whatever he brings to the table, I am willing to adjust and come out victorious,” said Atwell.
In his brief remarks, Isidore, who was accompanied by his manager Bharrath Ramoutar, said he is not underestimating his opponent since he is coming off three successful fights, but he will be looking to expose his opponent’s weaknesses as he has done before and come away with the win.
Other fights on the card pit Sharon Warde against Kwinda Rogers in a catchweight encounter, Edmond De Clou taking on Kelsie George for the second time, Dexter Marques meeting Rudolph Fraser also for the second time and Richard Williamson, who replaces Elton Dharry, facing Jamaica’s Rudolph Hedge, once the GBBC gets the okay to bring the pugilist from the Reggae Island, due to the hurricane threat.
With regard to Dharry, Abdool said the USA-based Guyanese who is the present WBC/CABOFE bantamweight champion needs to defend his title as soon as possible or lose same, especially if he (Abdool) gets two boxers from that division who are willing to fight for the belt.
Admission to the venue tomorrow night is $3 000 for ringside and $1 500 for stands and patrons who will be gracing the venue to witness the night’s action are asked to retain their ticket stubs, as telecommunications service provider Digicel will be giving away two cell phones during the night.
