Dameon Belgrave’s post-mortem report handed over to police : – DPP did not grant the additional 72 hours detention period

GOVERNMENT Pathologist, Dr. Vivekanand Brijmohan yesterday submitted the post-mortem report for Dameon Belgrave to the Guyana Police Force, which was then handed over to the Chairman of the Police Complaints Authority. Belgrave of Middle Street, Pouderoyen, West Bank Demerara was fatally shot during a police operation on October 05, 2012, at Hadfield Street, Georgetown.
Belgrave was shot dead when police opened fire at a crowd in the vicinity of White Castle Fish Shop, at Hadfield and John Streets, Werk-en-Rust, Georgetown, while chasing the occupants of a car they had been trailing through several streets.
On Friday last, Police Commissioner, Leroy Brumell told the Chronicle that the three police ranks who were previously on close arrest to facilitate an investigation into Belgrave’s death are now on open arrest.
He said the reason the men had to be placed on open arrest is because the file sent to Chairman of the Police Complaints Authority from the Crime Chief did not contain the post-mortem report.

Meanwhile, Director of Public Prosecutions, Ms Shalimar Ali-Hack has written the Chronicle yesterday, pointing out a mistake made in an article written by Mr. Leroy Smith captioned ‘Dameon Belgrave shooting…Ranks implicated now on open arrest’, published on page 13 in the October 23, 2012 edition of the Chronicle.
Ms. Ali-Hack drew our attention to paragraph 3 of the article where it is stated, the reason the suspects were on open arrest was “…because the first 72-hour detention period has expired, as well as the additional 72 hours granted by the Director of Public Prosecution.”
Ms. Ali-Hack said this is inaccurate as it was not the DPP who granted the additional 72 hours detention period. The additional 72 hours referred to was in fact granted by the High Court based on an Application made by the Commissioner of Police. This error is regretted and we sincerely apologise to the DPP, and our readers.
