AUBREY Gill’s letter in the Kaieteur News of October 21: “Harry Gill’s tyrannical tirade against the Opposition” was most disappointing and lacks credibility. Instead, it should have been captioned, “Another blundering attempt to bash the PPP/C Administration into submission.” For that was the real subject of the letter, not I. According to information posted on the internet, Dr. Aubrey Gill hails from Buxton, and was attached to the presidential security of the late President Forbes Burnham. He migrated to the United Stated after Burnham’s death in 1985. Dr. Aubrey Gill deliberately failed to mention this as one of the disclaimers in his letter, so readers can determine that he writes as a supporter and sympathizer of the PNC/APNU, and not as an objective political analyst.
It would be interesting to know how often Aubrey Gill visits the land of his birth, and when last he was there, if at all. For this may account for his total ignorance of the miraculous economic recovery and progress that Guyana has made under the PPP/C Administration, after inheriting a bankrupted and impoverished country in 1992 from the same party he supports… the PNC/APNU. He is also totally oblivious and naive to the devious and treacherous strategies employed by the joint opposition in Linden and Agricola, designed to provoke civil unrest and ultimately, insurrection.
In some of my earlier letters, I too was hostile to the previous PPP/C Administration. For in an attempt to catch-up on events back home, I became infuriated reading all the negative online reports emanating out of Georgetown, believing them to be credible. And it certainly did not help listening to the hateful and racist rhetoric aired almost daily on Benschop Radio following a great selection of Caribbean music to get you hooked.
But in my search for the truth, I made regular visits to many regions throughout Guyana in recent years. What I found was an astonishing economic recovery of a country that has risen from the depths of poverty and hopelessness, to one on the brink of greatness. The accomplishments of the PPP/C over the past 10 years have been phenomenal. Especially when one considers the gigantic effort it must have taken with good financial management, to restore the economy from one of bankruptcy during the first 10 years. But there is no praise from the opposition for this notable achievement by the PPP/C. The young generation are not aware of how deprived Guyanese were under the PNC that Aubrey Gill is prepared to die for. And the opposition is not likely to let them know just how fortunate they are to have been raised under the stewardship of the People’s Progressive Party.
Isn’t it ironic that the PNC’s past history of violence, incompetence and mismanagement while in government are some of the reasons the AFC refused to merge with them to contest the November 28 election last year? Yet by the very irresponsible and unpatriotic actions of the executive members, the AFC is turning out to be more dangerous than the PNC/APNU, earning the acronym ‘Always For Conflicts’.
Although we’re not of the same ethnicity nor related in any way, I was considered a ‘brother’ to the likes of Aubrey Gill and other PNC sycophants during the days when I unjustly criticised former President Bharrat Jagdeo and his Administration. They loved that! But now that I condemn the joint opposition for their racist agenda that threatens to destroy all the progress made in recent years, my views are considered “tyrannical tirade”.
The truth hurts, and people like Aubrey Gill can’t handle the truth. But this is the truth:
PNC/APNU’s only interest is the development of the one ethnicity that supports them… Guyanese of African descent. They pander to their political base for survival, and thwart any effort made by the Alliance For Change who appears to be aggressively going after that voting bloc. On the other hand, AFC leaders Khemraj Ramjattan and Moses Nagamootoo are trying desperately to show they’re more Black than Nigel Hughes, whose inflammatory rhetoric, threats and ultimatums are believed to have provoked the “peaceful protest” in Agricola.
The AFC is the aggressor in mobilising and inciting these protests, which are turning into anarchy with the destruction of private and government properties; violence; robbery; and other criminal activities against innocent Guyanese. To date, I have not heard the leaders of the PNC/APNU nor the AFC condemn the thuggery and bullyism of the so called “peaceful protestors”. Just take a look at the ethnicity involved in that mayhem, and it is very easy to understand why there is no condemnation by either opposition group. They’re all PNC/APNU supporters that the AFC is determined to win over. Neither is prepared to lose political support, so they remain silent, blame the Administration, and hope to achieve what they failed to do last election.
The Guyana police must be commended for exercising unbelievable restraint despite being assaulted by bottles, stones and Improvised Explosive Devises -IEDs. However, the police cannot allow this lawlessness to continue, emboldening the aggressors to up the ante.
Law and order must be enforced to protect the innocent and punish the thugs, and anyone else who threatens the stability and security of Guyana.
In the national interest, the leaders of the joint opposition have a moral responsibility to condemn these acts of violence despite the obvious risk to their political career. But then again, I’m taking a bigger risk in assuming that they’re guided by their conscience and morality.
