FORMER Pele Football Club (PFC) captain and national player 56-year-old Patrick ‘Labba’ Barton last week made a presentation of 16 pairs of uniforms to the California Square, East Ruimveldt-based Renaissance Football Club. Barton, who captained PFC for a five-year period from 1973 to 1978, told Chronicle Sport he felt pleased giving back to the Rodwell Jemmott-coached side, adding that it was football which give him his upward mobility.
“This here that is being done by ‘Roddy’ is helping to keep the youngsters off the streets and away from the ills that are plaguing our societies today, such as drugs and gang wars, and as they get older and become accomplished in the sport of football, they themselves will be able to give back to the sport, like I did today,” said Barton.
Jemmott thanked the United States-based Barton for choosing his club – which competes in Under-13 and 17 tournaments, organised by the Georgetown Football Association – to make his kind gesture and vowed that his players will wear the uniform with pride, as they have been doing in previous years.
