Eyewitnesses indicated that De Abreu who was heading east of Lamaha Street made a few attempts to cross the road before the emergency vehicle although its siren and emergency lights were on and failed in his bid to cross when the fire tender collided with his motor car sending him into the nearby bridge as the skidding tender ended in the nearby canal.
At the scene Fire Chief, Marlon Gentle and senior fire officials were having a firsthand look at the vehicle damages as the injured ranks were being rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital Complex along with De Abreu on whom doctors performed surgery and is presently in intensive care.alt
The fire ranks apart from the driver was treated and sent away as the driver remained under observation.
The $G6.5M emergency fire equipment came into operation just over four years ago and would now undergo recovery checks to see if it will be serviceable or would be cannibalised for spares to the others in the fleet.
At the GPHC family members and staff of De Abreu and De Sinco Trading Ltd were seen gathered in support of their boss’s family. Also present was Mr. Ramesh Dookhoo, Eddie Boyer, Capt. Gerry Goviera and Komal Ragnauth.
