Corriverton CPG rejects assault claim

LIAISON Officer of the Number 75 Village, Corriverton, Berbice Community Policing Group (CPG), Ms Radica Ramanadan, on Saturday,  sought to clear the air as it relates to a recent incident in which a man alleged that he was beaten by members of the CPG.

The CPG official told this publication that on October 13, 2012 they had a CPG meeting with the police and when the event was over, as they were making their way out of Kingston Road, Corriverton, a car was blocking the way.
The man at the wheel of the car happened to be Ulric Ramkishun who alleged that he was beaten by CPG members that evening.
Ramanadan explained that she asked the young man to move the vehicle since it was obstructing the free flow of traffic and they had wanted to exit the road and he became abusive even after she identified herself as a CPG member.
She stated that he began using expletives and when she asked him if he was under the influence he drove off speedily.
The CPG official said, in response, she and other CPG members went to Springlands Police Station and made a report.
Ramanadan claimed that half an hour after Mr. Ramkishun showed up at the Springlands Police Station  where CPG members were present as they were about to go on patrol in the community.
Ramkishun was pointed out to the cops as the person who verbally abused the CPG members earlier that day.
She noted that Ramkishun told the police that it was the CPG members present at the station, who beat him and the CPG members were asked to remain at the location for an identification parade.
Ramanadan explained that during the identification, Ramkishun failed to point out anyone and asked his wife, who was also present, to assist him since he claimed she knew who assaulted him but she was unsuccessful in making a positive identification of  any of  the CPG members present.
Ramanadan alleged that, at the Springlands Police Station, Ramkishun appeared to be heavily under the influence of alcohol and spoke loudly in making the report to the police and was reprimanded for his behaviour.
Ramanadan made it clear that no member of CPG is guilty of assaulting Ramkishun and since the publication of a glaring story in a section of the print media in the October 20, 2012 edition is of concern to the #75 Village, Corriverton CPG, she decided to respond.
She noted that CPG members are tasked with patrolling the community and do not perform traffic duties or routine checks but can effect an arrest. She, however, stressed that at no time did any member of the #75 Village CPG assault anyone, including Ramkishun.
Ramanadan told the Guyana Chronicle that the police have since launched an investigation.
Ulric Ramkishun, 27, of Queenstown, Corriverton alleged that on Saturday he was the victim of severe beating at the hands of several CPG members following an argument at about 18:30 hrs while they were doing “routine checks”.
