Minister Whittaker debunks city mayor’s assertions regarding Haags Bosch landfill

MINISTER within the Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development, Norman Whittaker, has responded to various inaccuracies raised by Georgetown Mayor Hamilton Green, who constantly seeks to mislead the public about the capacity and operation of the Haags Bosch sanitary landfill facility aback Eccles, East Bank Demerara. Last Wednesday, the minister pointed out that he had been reliably informed by a coordinator of the solid waste management facility about the tonnage of waste being accepted at that site, and he described as very disturbing the mayor’s assertion that the landfill was accepting double the waste it was supposed to carry.

Minister Whittaker indicated that as per records covering the period February 2011 to September 2012, a total of 196,306.28 tonnes of waste had been accommodated at the landfill, which works out to an average of 332.87 tonnes of waste being dumped daily.

He said he was    awaiting from the project’s coordinator further information regarding this matter.

He said the landfill was designed to accommodate 250 tonnes of waste daily, and statements that the site has been accepting double that amount are utterly untrue.

He said that the tonnage of waste being dumped will indeed be above average on some days, while on other days it may fall below that average; however, there isn’t a possibility that the landfill would be accepting twice the amount it is designed to accommodate.
