Bermuda Track & Field Association changes name

HAMILTON, Bermuda (CMC) — The Bermuda Track & Field Association has changed its name to the Bermuda National Athletics Association (BNAA) after members approved the switch on Thursday night.

BNAA president Donna Watson said the name change was made because the association encompasses road running and race walking in addition to track and field events.
The name change was also suggested at the last conference of the International Amateur Athletics Federation (IAAF), which is also encouraging national bodies to drop the word amateur from their names.
“We discussed this at the board level and decided it was time for us to be inclusive and do it before it was made mandatory (be pro-active instead of reactive),” Watson said. “Of course, we wanted to get through CARIFTA (held here earlier this year) and the remainder of our season first.”
