Search for suitable location main reason for delay in setting up DEA Office

HEAD of the Presidential Secretariat (HPS), Dr. Roger Luncheon, at his weekly post-Cabinet press briefing said that the identification of an actual location that addresses mutual concern has been one of the major factors that has forestalled establishment of a DEA Office in Guyana. On the part of the United States, a secure location is of extreme importance, since serving members of the American Intelligence Community will be stationed there, and as such, they are looking for a location where security is at its highest.
Meanwhile, on Guyana’s side, efforts have to be made to put in place the appropriate measures for collaboration between the entities responsible for the narcotic fight in Guyana, including the police, Customs Anti-Narcotic Unit (CANU), and the Berbice Anti-Smuggling Squad (BASS).
“We have indeed a plethora of organisations with whom a DEA presence will have to contend, and that also introduced some delays and tensions in working out a particular plan of action…the most important thing is having an impact and working in collaboration with the domestic agencies in furthering mutual goals in the anti-narcotic struggle; and I think from both sides, from the American and Guyana sides, we are comfortable in the way in which this collaboration is evolving,” the HPS explained.(GINA)
