Outside help or self-help?

IT is reported that Leader of the Opposition, David Granger has said that the opposition parties are seeking external assistance in drafting legislation. There has to be more to this story than one reads. Does this mean that the opposition does not have the expertise to draft legislation for parliament after years in parliament? What did the opposition do without such assistance over these years? Guyana need a good and constructive opposition, unfortunately this one does not seem to be it.

How long will their supporters be willing to wait for the opposition to gain the Presidency, while foregoing an opportunity for real economic progress? One suspects that too many have taken the position that it is better to ‘Rule in Hell than serve in Heaven’.

If Granger thought that local elections were that important, why not come back from vacation or start negotiating as soon as the new legislation was submitted instead of talking of next year and not later this year? The fact is that they want the new legislation to be exactly what they want it to be before approving a new election.

They are seeking a power shift to RDCs that would allow unfettered power and use of funds, almost making them a somewhat independent entity from a PPP dominated central government. This view may change if they come to power.

Why not hold elections now with what can be agreed on thru compromise and agree to settle the rest by next year? A lack of elections is severely impacting regional progress and plans and lead to too many IMCs, opposed by the same opposition. Time for regional voters to demand swifter action on  local elections.
