Making our Guyanese students the best they can be

After fifty years, the Ministry of Education, and the . Guyana Teacher’s Union. Schools’-Cycling, Swimming and Track and Field Championships must develop into a reservoir for our country’s top sportsmen and sportswomen in these three disciplines.

However, for this National Schools Championships to achieve its best results, then the Management Committee and other officials must be proactive and demonstrate the will and ambition for success.
To achieve the desired success it is vital that the focus of all involved is directed towards making our Guyanese students  the best that they can be.
Our intra-school, that is, our school House Championships must be highly competitive.
The various intra school groups should be exposed to an organised system throughout the school year.  While at Primary Schools, the adolescents, as far as possible, must be exposed to the various sports disciplines.
When our students enter Secondary school they must go with a positive attitude towards sports and most of them should show genuine interest in certain specific sport.

Hence, our teachers should be so able to identify the sport/s that a student can excel in and then cultivate their interest in those disciplines and motivate them to pursue excellence in their sports of interest.
The young cyclists are certainly more fortunate because the National Sports Commission has been organizing a Teach Them Young Cycling Programme at the National Park Annually during the July and August school holidays.
That eight weeks programme has attracted cyclists from as young as six years old.  Hence, today we have some very young cyclists who only recently dominated the Caribbean Championship.  Our Swimmers are also given a golden opportunity to start swimming at a very young age.
The Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport is offering parents the opportunity to let their children learn to swim at the Colgrain Pool and within six months they would be given the opportunity to pursue more advanced training at the Aquatic Centre.

The Swimmers while very young are exposed to training from an International Coach in addition to the training provided by our own Guyanese Coaches.
Our Athletes in Track and Field must receive more attention.  There is desperate need for a system where athletics clubs are more proactive.  Further our local coaches must be given the opportunity to identify talent at a young age so that such talent can be molded to achieve greatness.

Officials responsible for Sports in Schools must adopt a more altruistic approach.
Our students while at school must benefit from better coaching and facilities.  For example, I believe that every Secondary Schools should have a multi-purpose facility where they could play basketball, volleyball, table-tennis and badminton or some other combination of sports disciplines based on student interests.
However, students must also make use of public facilities in the vicinity of their schools and homes.

Queen’s College students must be encouraged to make maximum use of the Lawn Tennis Courts and the Squash Courts at Woolford Avenue.
But why only Queen’s College?  The Technical Institute, St. Johns High School, Richard Ishmael Secondary, North Georgetown Secondary only to name a few schools who must make better use of the facilities in their close proximity.
Parents must show greater interest in their children’s academic and all round development. Physical Education must be seen as an essential subject in order to ensure that our students develop into well-rounded individuals.
Persons responsible for the orgainising, managing and executing School Sports Programmes must be held accountable. Proper management reports after events and programmes must become mandatory. The lax attitude currently displayed by many persons involved in School Sports must be culled.
The various National Sports Associations/Federations must be fully involved in school sports programmes.

Every year we have to listen to complaints from the Guyana Amateur Athletics Association, The Guyana Swimming Association and the Guyana Cycling Federation that they are not fully involved in the Schools’’ Track and Field, Cycling and Swimming Championships.
Now is the time to establish a synergy among all parties involved in the development of our young people. All Guyanese must be made aware of the need for such synergy and work towards establishing the same.
The efforts and ideas of the Ministry of Education, The Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, The National Sports Associations and all other concerned persons/Organisations must be consolidated for the betterment of Youths.
Students must be exposed to sports so that they can live a healthy lifestyle.  We must propagate the truth that a healthy student is one who will achieve their highest potential academically, physically and socially.

Sports in schools must be compulsory but should also be promoted in such a way that it is attractive to our students.
However, it must be well organised with a programme from the nursery to university levels.  Our people must be guided towards appreciating and sharing the available facilities; this will go a long way towards establishing healthier social relationships in our country.
