Opposition wants to destabilise the country

THERE are many things going on in Guyana today some of which have strong undercurrents that will spell doom for the future.

One of these things is the emasculation of the police and it has been an ongoing programme ever since the PPP/C administration took office. Matters that were unheard of prior to this government taking office have now taken centre stage. The police, sadly, are the pawns in this unusual tussle for “control” of the state. A force that was famous for carrying out the biddings of the PNC is now bitterly chastised for their outrageous conduct.
In fact, the police who were once called “Burnham’s Bulldogs” known for their ability to carry out his brainless commands at every beck and call. I must remind my readers that it is the same police force, populated by mainly Afro-Guyanese most of whom served through the PNC years, the only difference is, the PNC is not in government or should I say they are not in a position now to “guide” them. The same police force they are, but under a different administration and herein lies the genesis for the problem. The police force of Guyana is now considered some of the worst human beings on the planet all because they are not condoning dangerous illegal activities of the opposition. Why? Why would a force that was the pride and joy of the PNC suddenly as it were, on a 180 degree turnaround to earn themselves such a horrible name. The answer my friend is blowing in the wind and here’s my point.
The opposition wants to destabilise the country and they are doing so in subtle ways. First you demoralise the force, attack the hierarchy beginning with the Commissioner, that nearly succeeded. When it seems this is not working they then turn to the actual day to day workings of the force every raid, every arrest, every attempt to wrest dangerous weapons from the hands of criminals is met with strong disapproval from the opposition, you hear talk of whom the police can and should arrest, when and where they should go and what there operations should be.
In the event that criminals are killed in the course of police carrying out their legitimate tasks then there is outrage and calls for inquiries and the never ending court cases. Here again the grand plan is to keep the police busily engaged in non-essentials while they stockpile weapons for an assault. The recent find of a huge cache of arms and ammunition in Lethem is a case in point. There is no question in my mind and that of all right thinking individuals that the mini army was meant for the police; the cue can be taken from statements made after the Linden fiasco. Statements were made that the police force should be taken out. I was privy to statements made by staunch political opposition figures ‘police killing awe wait yuh ain’t see nuttin yet police guh dead too.” Well, the situation is clear that the opposition is on a collision course with the lawmen and the Lethem find might just be a portentous sign of things to come. The Commissioner, who has lived through the crime spree years when a number of his colleagues died, is wary of opposition’s sinister plans. Probably, that is why the present find took place.

I call on the Commissioner and his forces to show no let up in the fight against those who seek to see their demise.
