VIJAI Samaroo, 39, of 59 Phase 2 Good Hope, East Coast Demerara, was killed yesterday afternoon when the truck in which he was travelling had a blow-out and toppled close to Splashmin’s Fun Park on the Linden/Soesdyke Highway.
Injured in the accident are the driver of the truck, Clyde Bradford and his son Hemraj, of Lusignan also on the East Coast of Demerara. The three had travelled to an interior location on Monday and were returning to the city when the tragedy occurred.
At the Diamond Hospital on the East Bank of Demerara yesterday afternoon, the dead man’s mother was inconsolable and at one point fainted after seeing her son’s body being placed in a hearse by undertakers of the Lyken Funeral Parlour.
Speaking with this publication at the hospital was the dead man’s wife of 14 years, Sattie Seelall. She said that she got a call at approximately 13:00hrs, yesterday, from her mother-in-law, informing her that Samaroo was involved in an accident. She said that she was informed by the truck driver’s son that the load in the vehicle prevented his father from properly controlling the truck.
Yesterday Harish Persaud, owner of the truck, was at the home of the dead man’s family when the Guyana Chronicle visited. He said that he received the tragic news at approximately 12:30hrs that the truck had had a blow-out. Asked about the road worthiness of the vehicle, the man explained that his truck was insured and only travelled to the interior location once every two months.
Persaud said that the truck was not on any official run or business for him. He said that Bradford, the man who was driving the truck at the time, is a very good friend of his. The man explained that the driver of the truck was having some financial problems and secured a job to ferry some items out of the interior; and based on the man’s request he loaned the truck to Bradford.
He said that he will be assisting the family in whatever way possible to ensure that the two children of the now dead man complete their schooling.
Speaking from his hospital bed yesterday afternoon, Hemraj Samaroo (unrelated to the deceased) said that while they were in the vicinity of Splashmin, the truck suffer a blow- out. He added that his father tried desperately to control the truck.
The young man said that the weight in the back of the truck made it difficult for his father to control the vehicle and it eventually toppled.
