Sisters found dead after going for coconut branches to make brooms

THE bodies of two sisters, Claire Kaliam, 24, and Jenny Kaliam, 25, of Adventure Village, Corentyne, Berbice, were Saturday morning found in the Black Bush backdam where they had gone to gather coconut branches.

It was reported that on Saturday morning, at about 07:00hrs, the two left to go to the backdam to cut coconut branches with their cousin, Deodatt Persaud.
Persaud returned later that afternoon, reporting that his cousins were kidnapped. This was reported to the Whim Police Station.
Persaud subsequently drank a poisonous substance and was rushed to the New Amsterdam Hospital, after giving specific directions as to where the bodies of his cousins were to be found.
The bodies were later found at the spot described by Persaud, covered with coconut branches.
Berbice Anti-Crime ranks who found the bodies were conducting investigations as Persaud remained a patient in hospital.
