THE 2012 Swimming Summer Programme came to a close on Friday with a simple ceremony on the deck of the Colgrain Swimming Pool in the presence of over 40 participants involved in the programme during the past six weeks. The event was one run by the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport in collaboration with the Guyana Amateur Swimming Association (GASA). Several coaches were tasked with the job of teaching the basics to children between the ages of six and twelve.
The programme took place on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays with classes from 09:00hrs to 10:00hrs and 10:00hrs to 11:00hrs. A terrific turnout over the six weeks was evident since the event initially catered for 60 participants but at the conclusion there were 96 participants.
In the feature address, Director of Sport Neil Kumar urged the parents of the young participants to keep them very active in the sport by dedicating at least an hour to honing their skills.
The programme began under the direction of Japanese coach Kumiko Inzunuka before National coach Stephanie Fraser took over and along with other local coaches saw the programme through to the end.
Pool Administrator Desiree Cummings also made fitting comments that would encourage the gathering to take their lessons seriously. She congratulated both the swimmers and the very supportive parents who were with them throughout the event.
