Man on $100,000 bail for ‘unknowingly’ toting employer’s firearm

Oral Roberts, 42, of Marakabai, Mahaicony Creek, was put on $100,000 bail yesterday after he pleaded not guilty to unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition. He appeared before Magistrate Alex Moore, charged with having in his possession a firearm and ammunition without a licence being in force at the time.
The father of two told the court that he was employed as a chainsaw operator, and that he was given the bag containing the firearm by his employer to take up the river. He was unaware of its contents.
Roberts was granted $50,000 bail on each charge by Magistrate Alex Moore, at the Sparendaam Magistrates’ Court, and the case was transferred to the Mahaicony Magistrates’Court for next month.
