I READ the letter article: West turned its back on hard-won freedom by Paul Kokoski and felt that it would be irresponsible of me if I do not respond.
I must admit that the article was generally positive but one serious mis-statement needs to be set straight.
Paul says: I am thinking here of existing, enacted and pending articles of legislation that legalise various drugs, prostitution, contraception, homosexuality, same-sex marriage, abortion, euthanasia, and genetic manipulation.
The Christian response to this atheistic secularism should be to seek the embodiment of natural law in the civil law.
The writer has confused secularism with atheism and has therefore dumped the blame for the legislation of “bad morality” on “atheistic secularism”.
One needs to understand the distinction between Atheism and Secularism in order to not concoct such a nonsensical term. Secularism basically accepts the existence of multiple religions (based on a supernatural) and favours no specific one.
Atheism, on the other hand, pays no interest to religion or superstition. Instead, it directs its energy towards improving our daily existence, protecting nature’s marvelous work and never expecting heaven or hell as a reward.
This most serious mis-statement, however, implies that “legislation that legalise various drugs, prostitution, contraception, homosexuality, same-sex marriage, abortion, euthanasia, and genetic manipulation” is the product of Atheism. A quick review of the nations that legalise these “immoralities” would reveal that every one of them is of the Judaic persuasion. I, personally, do not know of an Islamic, Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist or any other non-Judaic religious country that has these laws. Not one is governed by Atheists.
Even more certain, there is no body, anywhere in the world, which is atheistic and which directly or indirectly endorses such “immorality”.
I believe that this mis-statement is a result of the author’s ignorance of the true nature of atheism and that is understandable. Religions generally prohibit its followers from knowing anything except its “holy” words.
Atheists are human beings who prefer to concentrate their energy and existence on bettering our understanding and our physical existence and acting to maintain it. The mind of an atheist is a logical, scientific instrument with just that purpose. There is no expectation of reward for doing positive things nor is there a fear of “hell” if we do not succeed.

the wise learn from the experience of others.” – Democritus, 460-370 B.C.
