HEAD of the Presidential Secretariat, Dr. Roger Luncheon, said the unimaginably poor delivery of services by the Mayor and City Council of Georgetown and the atrocious garbage situation dominated discussion at the Cabinet meeting last Tuesday. He said that Cabinet had expressed its concern at the worsening situation within the city administration and the deterioration of its delivery of goods and services to taxpayers at various departments and in the wards of the city.
“Cabinet expressed its concern once more to the Minister of Local Government and Regional Development, Ganga Persaud, about the M&CC of Georgetown, and described its delivery of services as unimaginably poor and the garbage situation as atrocious,” he said.
He said that the minister had noted that financial shortfalls and financial considerations continue to plague the city and its administration.
The ministry had also indicated its support for the city administration, particularly the newly installed officers.
The ministry had identified efforts to make these officers more efficient and has also been making efforts to have more of the City’s garbage trucks returned to serviceability.
He added that both ministers within the Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development have assured Cabinet that they are making continuous efforts to turn around the current undesirable situation in the M&CC in Georgetown.
“Efforts are also being made to create much greater collaboration among stakeholders such as central government, the private sector and philantrophists, all of whom are greatly distressed by the poor state of our once famous Garden City,” he said.
He disclosed too that Cabinet was advised that police investigations into the financial irregularities uncovered during the Gaskin /Burrowes engagements were continuing, and so far they have not provided any information concerning criminal charges.
