I will tend to agree with Mr. Jagnarine Singh, General Manager, Guyana Rice Development Board (GRDB) that rainfall has some benefits for farmers countrywide. Training and education are important in helping farmers to adopt new technologies and to understand the benefits of rainfall water in their crops. Rice cultivation and reaping do not work with mathematics as outlined by Mr. Dharamkumar Seeraj, General- Secretary of the Rice Producers Association (RPA).
When there is a shortage of water in the fields, uneven flowering of the rice plants leads to uneven maturity of the grains. Grain maturity variation can result from differences in tilling periods and improper field management. The open pollinated varieties of rice in Guyana are conventionally bred and fast maturing, suiting the rainfall condition that farmers are currently experiencing.
In much of the developing world, lack of appropriate local information about the weather pattern hinders development planning and programmers and hampers efforts to monitor change. The present crop of rice has not been seriously affected by rainfall and some of the infrastructures are in good shape here in Region 2. Because of the unusual nature of the weather pattern at this time, all the dams and infrastructures were prepared for in advance by the Regional Vice-Chairman,Mr Vishnu Samaroo.
It was reported that there are no traces that Guyana will be facing La Nina weather situation characterised by excessive rainfall as was reported earlier. The rainfall is expected to continue up to the end of August, with a shortfall of about 20 percent of rainfall that is usual for this season. The late harvested crop is expected to be seriously affected by paddy bugs which affected yields and quality.
Weather forecasting has never been so crucial for rice farmers. Climate change means that they can no longer rely on the signs that they used in the past to help them decide when to sow or harvest. These observations were based on the rains, which have now become too irregular.
