It is hoped diplomacy will triumph over destruction

THE world today lives by diplomacy and discussions for the solution of problems, and it is hoped that the government and the negotiators on the Linden situation with the help of other opposition parties achieve an understanding and a peaceful solution to the controversy. If confrontation should continue to take place, not only would the government and the people of Linden be involved, but the two peoples and their respective allies will have to come to an amenable and peaceful resolution.
In confrontation and protests the hate, bitterness and untold hardships encountered among those involved in the conflict would continue for generations. It is hoped that diplomacy will triumph over destruction in this cause,
What transpired on July 18, 2012 is now well known; the killing of three young protesters for the reduction of the hike in electricity tariffs. The interior locations, including Lethem, which is the principal centre of government administration in the Rupununi district, came under siege by roadblocks and burning of tyres from protesters causing food, fuel and other basic important items to be cut off.
There is public terror against those travelling from Lethem and the interior locations to Georgetown and burning of government offices and buildings. The township of Linden is gripped in fear by daily demonstrations and blockage of main roads and streets, the business leaders of Lethem displayed tremendous courage in standing firmly by diverting their lorries and minibuses through Bartica via Georgetown and back.
Only dialogue could end the political standoff. It also presents the potential for a solution to the existing situation in Linden within the framework of the economic and security problematic. There should be no hatred or enmity between the people of Linden and the government or the peoples of the interior locations. There should be immediate plans for the development and solution of the disputed area by both parties. The solution to this problem is of immense importance to everyone. We cannot take the country forward if we remain fundamentally divided.
