THE Guyana Tourism Authoirty (GTA) will be selling tour packages for the Fifth annual Wakenaam Nite, set for August 25th 2012. These packages will be offered at an affordable price of US$50 (Gy$10,000) and will include an island tour, fishing expedition, and opportunity for camping activities.
Visitors going to Wakenaam for this event will have the facility of choosing between an ‘Island Tour’ and ‘Night Fishing Expedition’, which includes transportation, accommodation, refreshments, and the opportunity to attend the Wakenaam Nite Concert.
According to Tourism, Industry and Commerce Minister, Irfaan Ali, these tourism packages are being marketed under the ‘Rediscover Home’ tourism initiative.
“We want to extend this activity to create a signature event for Wakenaam as we open up new opportunities and frontiers; and (we want) to improve the economic prospects in the community,” he said.
This annual event will offer more opportunities for the community members to showcase their potential, according to Ali, who made this pronouncement during the launch of the event, on Friday, August 10th, at the Tourism Ministry, where he was joined by the President of the Planning Committee, Sheik Ahamad, and other committee members.
Minister Ali also noted that the event will be extended to include two more days of fun filled activities, as the organizing committee strives to improve the activity.
This year’s event is to be held at its usual venue, the Wakenaam Community Centre Ground, which is expected to attract large turnouts to a stage show featuring various artistes and an expo showcasing what the island has to offer.
