MINISTER Persaud said he is disappointed with the current garbage situation in the city. He also pointed out that nine compactor trucks and three pickups were given to the City Council to help with the solid waste problem, but only one of the trucks is working. How long does it take government to realise that the M&CC is incapable of solving the problems of drainage and sanitation, regardless of what government gives them? No more piecemeal solutions, government has a duty to ensure that the capital looks like one. The question that needs to be asked is, what are the legal ramifications involved if the government was to take over from the M&CC these responsibilities, even on a temporary basis?
Any attempt to partner with this institution is doomed to failure, unless it is radically reformed. This is one of the critical reasons for government to push for local government elections prior to year-end.
The President should engage the opposition in achieving local government elections based on what can be agreed, with a deadline for agreement on the unresolved issues. The news of two possible recycling plants is welcome news. The city council cannot properly manage the new landfill site and therefore it should be under different management.
