Court order extends constitutional redress case by two months

ACTING Chief Justice Mr. Ian Chang, who in December 2011 had granted a six-month order for Magistrate Ms. Judy Latchman to complete a case in which the applicants are seeking constitutional redress and reliefs for contravention of fundamental rights and freedoms guaranteed in the constitution, has granted the magistrate a two-month extension of time in accordance with a motion filed by the Attorney General and the Director of Public Prosecutions last Monday, August 6th, after that six-month extension had expired without the case being completed. That extension was granted in the matter of Dinesh Singh, Deoroop Sugrim, Kumar Kallidin and Dennis Ramkarran applying for constitutional redress under Articles 40, 144, and 153 of the Constitution of Guyana for contravention of their fundamental rights and freedoms guaranteed by those articles; and the Attorney General of Guyana and the Director of Public Prosecutions, who are the respondents in the matter.
The order by the acting Chief Justice read: “UPON reading the application by way of summons on the part of the abovenamed respondents, the Attorney General of Guyana and the Director of Public Prosecutions, filed herein on the 7th day of August, 2012; and the affidavit of Shalimar Ali-Hack, sworn to on the 7th day of August 2012, and filed in support thereof; and upon hearing Attorney-at-law for the respondents and for the applicants, it is ordered that the order of this Honourable Court, dated the 9th day of December, 2011, be and is hereby varied to give the respondents herein, The Attorney General of Guyana and the Director of Public Prosecutions, an extension of time of two (2) months from the date hereof for Her Worship Magistrate Ms. Judy Latchman, to conclude the trial being heard by her, under case jacket Nos. 861/2004,863/2004,864/2004 at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court”.
