Suspect in Bert Whyte’s murder arrested

POLICE yesterday said that the prime suspect in the murder of Bert Whyte was arrested on Saturday during the stopping and searching of a mini-bus at Yarrowkabra, Soesdyke/Linden Highway. He is in police custody assisting with the investigations. Bert Whyte, 45, of Phoenix Park, West Bank Demerara was fatally stabbed on May 14 last.
Whyte, who had met the suspect and had travelled in his car to Bentick Street, in the city, was brutally stabbed in broad daylight while his attacker made good his escape in his car, leaving the man to die.
The former Manager of Guyana and Trinidad Mutual Life Insurance Company Limited was last seen alive when he had picked up his niece from a private school in the city, hours before his death.
The child told the police that there was another man who was unfamiliar to her in Whyte’s car when she was picked up.
Instead of taking his niece home, Whyte reportedly dropped the girl off at the Stabroek speedboat stelling for her to make her way home to Pouderoyen, West Bank Demerara.
Accompanied by his killer, he then made the fateful journey to Bentinck Street, Tiger Bay. Reports indicate that the suspect was driving while Whyte was in the front passenger seat.
Whyte of Pouderoyen, West Bank Demerara, was seen later, struggling with another man in his car before exiting the vehicle , running into Main Street and collapsing outside of a Main Street restaurant and bar.
He managed to give his cellular phone to the security personnel at the establishment who subsequently contacted relatives.
He was rushed to the Georgetown Hospital Corporation (GPHC) where he died shortly after.
