AN Essequibo mother of three narrowly escaped death after being attacked by a lone bandit while walking to her home at Hope Housing Scheme on the East Coast of Demerara on the night of 20 July last. Vadewattie Sukhu, 32, who has moved away from her matrimonial home, said it was God that saved her from death. She recalled that it was about 18:45 hours when she was walking along the street when a man grabbed her from behind, locked her neck and demanded her money.
Vadewattie said she handed her bag with all the money she had but the man continued to choke her and grabbed her hair pulling backwards in an attempt to break her neck. She said the attack took place a short distance from her home and she saw her husband and two other persons sitting in her verandah and called four times for him to help her but there was no response.
The woman said she fought with the lone bandit and pleaded with him to let her go because she had already handed over her money, but the man whom she scratched several times on the face with her nails kicked and stamped her several times in the back and other parts of the body.
She recalled that the man dragged her into a ditch with water and forced her face down into the muddy water. She said it was death staring her in the face as she struggled for life.
Vadewattie said the man sat upon her in the ditch and she lost consciousness temporarily. She said he lifted her on his shoulder and was heading for the Hope Big Canal to dump her body when she bit him on his shoulder and he knocked her down on the ground, kicking her several times again. Vadewattie said by that time she was weak one of her eyes was swollen and closed up and her legs were badly damaged.
She said the man started to curse and said, ‘ how this woman taking so long to dead” with those words Vadewattie said she realised that the man’s mission was to kill her.
She said he became confused and left in search of a piece of wood to beat her to death and with the little strength she ran home and started to knock on the walls of her house to get the attention of her husband because she couldn’t have talked.
Vadewattie said she was rushed to hospital at the Accident and Emergency Unit but did not get any treatment for her injuries that night because of some problems and she was taken back home by her husband. She said the matter was reported to the Cove and John Police Station but there has been no visit to the scene of the attack by the police nor has anyone been arrested in connection with the matter.
Vadewattie who is going through serious problems with her marriage said she has moved away from her Hope Block 5 residence because of fear for her life. She is now calling for justice and for the laws to take its course.
She said her problems were reported to the police welfare section several times already.
