MORE than 30,000 residents of Linden, Region 10, are to benefit from an improved water supply under the Linden Water Supply and Rehabilitation Programme, as Cabinet recently approved two contracts totalling $476M. The contract for lot 1, valued at $157M, will see the installation of distribution and transmission mains on the western section of the mining town, while lot 2 will see the rehabilitation of distribution networks and mains on the eastern side of town, and this contract is valued at $319M.
Both projects are expected to start within another month, and when completed, will see Linden consumers experiencing an improved water quality as well as higher levels of service.
In addition, $1.7B will also be spent for the construction and rehabilitation of two water treatment plants at Amelia’s Ward and Wisroc. Works will also be done to rehabilitate existing elevated and ground storage tanks.
The project also encompasses a large public education and community outreach component.
The US$12M contract for the Linden Water Supply and Rehabilitation Programme was signed in the presence of hundreds of Lindeners on July 13, 2011.
The initiative was a direct result of former President Bharrat Jagdeo’s promise to residents during a Cabinet outreach in the region.
