LEON Doris, alias ‘Black Boy’, the mini-bus conductor who was indicted at the current Demerara Assizes for having carnal knowledge of a girl under age 15 on Friday,November 13,2009, will have to stand a new trial. The mixed jury in the trial, over which Justice Frank Holder presided, failed to agree on a verdict.
Their indecision, on Monday, was in the proportion of seven to five but, in such cases, the requirement is either 10 to two or eleven to one.
The case before the prosecution, conducted by State Counsel Diana Kaulesar and Renita Singh, is that the virtual complainant was induced by the accused to follow him to a house in Kitty, Georgetown, to collect a receipt from his sister.
But, on arrival there, she was sexually assaulted.
However, led by Defence Counsel Peter Hugh, Doris claimed it was a case of mistaken identity.
The teenager, who was in court when the disagreement by the jurors was announced, burst into tears and had to be consoled by the prosecutors.
