STAFF members of the Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development yesterday bedecked themselves in African wear, and modelled for their colleagues at a simple ceremony held at that ministry’s Fort Street, Kingston offices. Planned by the ministry’s National Events Committee, the event was attended by Ministers Ganga Persaud and Norman Whittaker, Permanent Secretary, Collin Croal, staff and work study students attached there.
Staff member Davin Washington made a presentation on the significance of Emancipation, in celebration of the holiday today. The staff members who modelled also sang a folk song while modelling.
Minister Persaud extended Emancipation greetings to all present, and commended the committee for putting together the event. He made the point that Guyana’s diversity contributes to its strength, and that beauty can be seen in all descriptions and through differences.
He encouraged that while homage is being paid to African ancestry, everyone should remember that they are Guyanese. “Some in society may want you to think that you are freedom-less. Be careful,” he urged.
He pointed out that freedom can be ‘tasted’ at this point in history, because of the many sacrifices that were made by ancestors, especially those of African descent. “It’s time to pay homage and respect,” he observed.
Minister Whittaker said he was happy to see that both senior and junior level staff members, along with the work study students, were involved in yesterday’s celebration, which would have served to put everyone in the mood for today’s celebration.
He noted that it was important to remember great leaders of the past, like Dr Cheddi Jagan and Mr Forbes Burnham, who saw the importance of celebrating the various religious festivals and holidays of the different races in Guyana.
He charged that the focus must not only be on the fun aspect of the celebration, but on its importance and significance.
The leaders of the past, especially Dr Cheddi Jagan, saw these celebrations as opportunities for Guyanese to see beyond their differences, he said.
