TWO men and a damaged minibus are in police custody following an accident on the Mahaica Public Road East Coast Demerara approximately 12:30 hours on Thursday. According to the Driver of Minibus BNN 7421, Ishwar Samaroo, he was heading in the direction of Georgetown with passengers in the minibus when a cow ran suddenly across the road and in front of his vehicle.
He said that he was too late in applying brakes and the animal was hit with massive force by the bus which was almost full with passengers.
The passenger that was sitting in the front seat of the minibus suffered injuries and the animal apparently died two minutes after it was hit.
Witnesses claim that a herd of cows were on the road grazing at the roadside when one of the cows that were in front made a sudden run across the road directly in front of the minibus.
The owner of the animal who lives not far from the scene was informed but at that time he was not at home.
Upon returning home the owner of the animals and Samaroo were taken to the police station for further questioning. The carcass of the cow and the minibus were also taken to the police station for further investigation.
Ms Dhanrajie Singh, a passenger who was in the bus at that time of the accident, said that she lives not very far from the owner of these animals and she has always warned him that letting the animals wander out to the public road would prove fatal one day.
She stated that she knows of many persons that have complained to him about these animals and how they have to run down the road in fear screaming until they are safely out of the animals reach and he has never taken them seriously. She said that she herself was once a victim of one of the animal attacks, however, he still gives the animals free rein on the streets and roadways even after all the complaints.
