I have been travelling around Guyana over the last two weeks supervising a NACTA poll on current issues and querying PNC-APNU supporters on their preference for leadership of the PNC and whom they think would actually win this weekend’s leadership contest. PNC supporters are almost evenly split between Carl Greenidge and David Granger for leadership with the other candidates trailing way behind and having no chance at winning. Greenidge is preferred among rank and file PNC supporters (Man in the Street) to be leader. He scores slightly higher than Granger among hard core PNC supporters to be leader while Granger holds the advantage among the actual voters or party delegates who can vote.
Overall, APNU and PNC supporters feel Granger will prevail. Party activists indicate they are working for his election as leader because they feel he has provided effective leadership and will be more successful in expanding support for the PNC and APNU. Business people also prefer Granger. However, many PNC supporters feel that APNU and the PNC should not have the same leader and say, therefore, someone else should be leader.
Many PNC supporters say they endorse the position taken by Greenidge that the PNC (APNU) should be more militant in its dealing with the PPP administration. Some queried the fairness of the election and who will actually be allowed to vote.
Political analysts I spoke with feel Granger will prevail because of support from the party hierarchy. Among delegates I spoke with, he has the advantage.
It will be an interesting contest and if all goes well (if there are no machinations with the actual voting and delegates’ list) with the electoral process, it could serve as a model for the other parties to choose their leaders and executives.
Granger has edge over Greenidge in PNCR election
